SUNN 0)))

SUNN 0))) are awesome, real nasty Doom metal, but why dont they just get a drummer and become a proper band? Are they just trying to stand out or something. They would be my favourite Doom outfit if they had a drummer so i'll just have to stick to Electric wizard, weirdo's. Theyve ruined theyre own soungs by not bothering with a soddin drummer. Herb woulda been great with 'em.

Yes they want to stand out, don't question the answers.

What is your favorite album?
What is there most "doom" album?

I've heard this band before, hated what I heard, but maybe I heard the wrong stuff. I keep hearing about people hearing this band and liking it.

I recall the one album was called "Flight of the Behemoth" or something like that, and it was just "DOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN" for like 30 minutes. I like avant-garde and all sorts of other weirdo music, but what I heard doesn't sound like anything but weirdos recording nothing.
It's after the end of the world, don't you know that yet?

Sunn doesn't have a drummer and make real songs because that's not what they are about. By "they" I mean Stephen O'Malley, Greg Anderson and a long list of other part-time contributors.

O'Malley and Anderson both are in and have been in several other bands like:

Goatsnake: The most straight forward, sabbathy southern rock with clean vocals, but destructive low guitar tone

Burning Witch: Pretty straight forward doom with screeching Ozzy sound alike on vocals.

Ginnungagap: Less oppresive, more mellow, drone-ish stuff with weird foreign istruments and stuff.

Lotus Eaters: Really mellow stuff with Aaron Turner from Isis among others.

Khanate: You just have to hear it to understand.

Sunn's albums Flight of the Behemoth, Grimmrobe Demos and 00 Void are the most drone. You certainly have to be in a sound listening mindset and not a song hearing mindset. The patterns and buildups/releases are wonderful but you need a long attention span and to clear your mind of everything else.

White1 and White2 are of a different ilk, and they experiment with things much more. (at first Sunn was mostly a tribute to the early Earth albums but with the White albums they evolved into something different).

Black1 is coming out soon and is going to have black metal tinge to it, and they have contributions from a couple of the most heralded american underground black metalers. (When I say Black Metal, I don't mean like Cradle of Filth or Immortal, but the stuff that is patterned after Burzum...one man operations, ambient, lo-fi, experimental).

In an example of how they both celebrate and find the humor in metal, this guy who is the band Xasthur did some vocals recorded in a coffin that was sitting in the back of a hearse. That, to me, is awesome on more than one level.

Whether you like them or not, they are avant-garde.

Ah yes, SUNN 0)))

Someone at work (whose view I alwas trust) was going mad on them, so I got a couple of albums.

I dont know about them. Just seems, well, boring.

Aparently, a single chord with some ever-so-slight variation for 20 mins counts as a track to this band....

SUNN O))) is one of those bands that I'll never try to convince anyone to listen to and like... Hell, I have a hard time even recommending them to anyone because they're so far out there. I personally find them to be awesome, but it took me a few attempted spins of flight of the behemoth before I was in the right frame of mind and able to make it all the way through and really appreciate it.

SUNN O))) are good. No doubt of that. Thinking about it drums wouldnt work, its not like Isis where drums could be used as build up and release type instrument, but the songs are atmospheric and long - the shortest one i know is 'Bow 1' which is 5 mins long.

Hairwaytoheven, - have you heard 'teeth of Lions Rule the Divine'? its got greg anderson and stephen Omalley in it and its cool.
